Therapeutic listening (TL) is a sound-based program that can be utilized to empower children to develop skills in sensory areas such as auditory processing, respiration, vestibular, space orientation, language, and academics, to name a few.

TL uses organized sound patterns in each of its albums, however, each music selection varies in style and complexity of sound. This evidenced-based auditory intervention can be used as an additional therapeutic tool to enhance sensory integration.

Overall these sounds, specifically chosen by a certified therapist, are used to stimulate the nervous system in a way that promotes a sense of grounding and centering of the body and mind in time and space. In TL this is known as the orienting response, which in turn supports sustained attention, state of arousal, and active listening, which we all require to effectively learn and interact with the world around us.

What skills can therapeutic listening address?

Attention, listening, and communication (verbal and non-verbal)

Ease of transitions or ability to tolerate changes in routine

Peer interaction and appropriate play skills

Direction following

Sleep, bowel/bladder control, and eating

Perceiving and navigating space

Timing and sequencing of motor skills

Over/under responsivity to sounds, touch, and taste

Michigan Pediatric Therapy has occupational therapists that are trained in therapeutic listening. Please contact us if you have any additional questions about TL or to schedule an evaluation to see if this program could be beneficial for your child.
